Overlay stuck or not updating
When using TIKTORY overlays in TikTok Live Studio, you may encounter situations where the overlay freezes and stops responding to updates. This is caused by the internal browser engine becoming unresponsive.
The Problem
TikTok Live Studio uses an internal browser to render web-based overlays. Occasionally, this browser can freeze, causing your overlay to become stuck and stop updating. Unlike OBS, TikTok Live Studio does not provide a simple “refresh” button for link sources.
Symptoms
- Overlay elements stop updating (e.g., alerts don’t appear, counters don’t change)
- The overlay displays but appears completely frozen
- Interactions from your live stream are not reflected on screen
- Removing and re-adding the link source does not fix the issue
Why This Happens
The browser engine inside TikTok Live Studio can become unresponsive due to memory issues, long streaming sessions, or internal bugs. Unfortunately, TikTok Live Studio does not expose a cache refresh option for link sources, making this harder to fix than in other streaming software.
Solutions
Solution 1: Append a Query Parameter (Quick Fix)
The fastest way to force a cache refresh without restarting:
- Click on your overlay link source in TikTok Live Studio
- Open the source settings/properties
- Edit the URL by appending a random query parameter at the end
- Example: If your URL is
https://app.tiktory.com/live/xyz123 - Change it to
https://app.tiktory.com/live/xyz123?refresh=1
- Example: If your URL is
- Save the changes
Each time the overlay freezes, change the parameter value (e.g., ?refresh=2, ?refresh=3, etc.). This forces TikTok Live Studio to treat it as a new URL and reload the content.
Tip: You can use any query parameter, such as
?v=1,?t=123, or simply?1. Just make sure it’s different each time.
Solution 2: Restart TikTok Live Studio
If changing the URL doesn’t work:
- End your live stream (if currently live)
- Close TikTok Live Studio completely
- Reopen TikTok Live Studio
- Your overlay should now work correctly
This fully clears the browser cache and resets the internal browser engine.
Solution 3: Use OBS with Virtual Camera (Recommended)
For the most reliable experience, consider using OBS Studio with its Virtual Camera feature:
- Set up your TIKTORY overlay in OBS Studio
- Enable OBS Virtual Camera (Tools → Start Virtual Camera)
- In TikTok Live Studio, add the virtual camera as a video source instead of a link source
This approach gives you access to OBS’s superior browser source handling, including the ability to easily refresh the cache when needed.
Summary
| Method | Effort | Effectiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Append query parameter | Low | Usually works |
| Restart TikTok Live Studio | Medium | Always works |
| Use OBS Virtual Camera | Initial setup | Most reliable |
The query parameter trick is the fastest solution during a live stream, but using OBS with Virtual Camera provides the most reliable long-term solution.
